UPLOADING from an URL - HOW TO transfer files from Megaupload to Stage
Most regular uploaders here at Stagevu prefer to upload their files not directly through the official upload page but with the help of a third party file hoster. This small detour often saves time and nerves since direct uploads to SV can be rather unreliable.
Also, should your video get removed from Stagevu for whatever reason, you can replace it with a few clicks and without much hassle. Since the transfer itself uses only the bandwith of the file hoster and Stagevu and not the limited speeds your ISP grants you, the process just takes seconds to a few minutes at most.
An added benefit of the online storage obviously is having an additional backup space for your treasured files.
Currently there are two free services you can use to url-upload to StageVu:
DROPBOX:
+ you can resume your uploads after pausing / should your connection fail.
+ "Instant Uploads" (see below)
- only 2GB of online storage with a free account
MEGAUPLOAD:
- resuming your uploads was possible once, but sadly is no more.
- with a free account you're restricted to downloading files up to 1GB. Bigger video files would have to be split.
- Your links die 90 days after the last download
+ 200GB! of online storage
+ "Instant uploads" If the file you are uploading has been uploaded to MU in the past, you'll get your very own link instantly! That's because on MU the file itself never gets removed, only the links to the file die.
#####HOW TO#####################################################################
I'll now run you through the process with Megaupload using Firefox.
1) Go to Megaupload.com and register for a free account
2) Get the Mega Manager. Install.
3) Open the Mega Manager, log in and upload you video file (Video files have an extension like avi, wmv, mkv or mp4; zip and rar files are archives and won't work!)
...
after many hours (depending on the size of your video):
4) Once your upload is finished, click on the download link in the Mega Manager and let it take you to the download page:
While you wait for the countdown to finish, log into your StageVu account and go to the upload page.
5) On the Megaupload page right click "Regular Download" and choose "copy link location"
6) On the Stagevu page copy this address to the url upload field and hit "Upload"
Watch as the progress bar zooms to 100%
7) Success!
If you get an error message during or immediately after the transfer, just hit "Submit a video" again and let it take you to another upload server, or replace the server number in the address bar yourself with one you know that will work. (Check the forum for bug updates)
! Be aware that the Megaupload link expires after about 30 seconds, so be quick. If your first upload attempt fails, you can usually use it for another two or three tries, then you should go back to Megaupload, refresh the page and get a new link.
If the error message reads "code 503 Limit Exceeded", it means too many people have tried to url-upload to this server recently - Megaupload does limit downloads per IP. Again, just try with a different server, or better, wait for a time of day (or night) with less traffic.

This guide was inspired by a similar one Werewolf did a while ago. The original thread can be found here:

Re: UPLOADING from an URL - HOW TO transfer files from Megaupload to Stage
Yeah well, I wanted to compile the info in one place for future references. In the old thread the info was all over the place.
rab, good to know. Added it to the first post.
If someone has success with another file hoster let us know and I'll put it in.
Also, I'd like to hear about your experiences with Megaupload.
What bugs me right now is that they seem to limit speeds nowadays. My speeds aren't great to begin with - I have 40 - 44 kb max up-speeds by default, and that's what I used to get with MU, but now I only get 35kb at best. (Right now it's 27kb!) That makes uploading larger files even less fun than before - If I don't hit an instant upload (which happens quite often on MU, but not so much with the more obscure stuff), I pretty much give up on that vid.

Thanks Grant for the picture tutorial, very helpful! Megaupload does take its sweet time now and again, they want you to buy a premium account of course. BUT once the URL gets going on SV, I've seem uploads go as high as 3400KB/s. Unreal.

Though Uploads are down for the moment, it's good to know how to go about this business for the time they're enabled again. Thanks Grant!
