The gate, through which these are taken, doesn't close and Edward forces his way out. Envy then reveals himself to Edward as Hohenheim and Dante's son, before killing him. Alphonse then uses the Philosopher’s Stone to revive Edward with his original body. Edward wakes up to find Alphonse had dissapeared, he then sacrifices his life and Alphonse's memories to bring him back. Alphonse is found some time later while Edward was transported back to the world where Rules of Physics apply instead of Alchemy. The story continues in the movie.
