The screenplay quickly became a run-away best seller upon its release as novel following the success of the movie. What began as writer Herman Raucher's memoir to his childhood friend "Oskie" quicky became a story of love and longing which entralled millions of fans around the world. Summer of '42 remains one of the best love stories ever made.

full of the kinds of things boys becoming men did in 1942. Gary Grimes did a marvelous job with his part. I especially liked the love scene with Jennifer O'Neil because of it's gentleness. In those moments in her arms Hermie the boy became a man and gave to her as a man. As the person narrating the story said at the end; he lost Hermie the boy that summer.
