Saawariya (Hindi:सावरिया, Urdu: ساوریا, English: Beloved) is a Hindi film based ...Saawariya (Hindi:सावरिया, Urdu: ساوریا, English: Beloved) is a Hindi film based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's short story "White Nights".

Released and co-produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment on November 9, 2007, it is the first Bollywood movie to receive a North American release by a Hollywood studio,[1] shortly preceding Walt Disney Pictures' animated feature Roadside Romeo (2008), and Warner Bros.' Chandni Chowk to China.[1] Additionally, it is one of the first Bollywood films to be released on Blu Ray.[citation needed]

The stars are Ranbir Kapoor (son of actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh), Sonam Kapoor (daughter of Anil Kapoor),[2] Salman Khan, and Rani Mukerji, with veteran actresses Zohra Sehgal and Begum Para in supporting roles.

Production
Bhansali initially wanted Rani Mukerji and Salman Khan's extended guest appearance to be hidden from the public[3] but later made public that they would be seen in supporting roles.[4]

The first official teaser of the film was accessed by New York Times on August 25, 2007.[5] The first screening was held October 28, 2007, though only for those associated with the film
The story first introduces Ranbir Raj (Ranbir Kapoor). Raj is a free bird with no tension at all, Raj soon joins RK Bar, the town's most luxurious club, as the lead singer. During the singing, he makes friends with Gulabji (Rani Mukherji), a prostitute. Knowing what Gulabji does, Raj still treats her in friendly manner. Raj tells Gulabji that he needs somewhere to stay Gulabji then tells Raj that there is only one woman to give you a house and that is Lilian (Zohra Sehgal),and she will only let those who she likes, stay. Raj decides to meet the next morning. Raj meets Lilian and she agrees to let Raj stay with her because he reminds her of her son who went and joined the army. Raj goes out for a walk and meets a mystery girl dressed in black and holding a umbrella. Raj tries to talk to her, but she runs away and Raj starts to follow her. Getting the wrong impression, the girl shouts at Raj and tells him to go away. Raj tells her that he will go away, but asks what if another bad guy starts to follow you. The girl agrees and lets Raj take her home. The mystery girl tells Raj her name is Sakina (Sonam Kapoor), and there and then Raj falls in love with her. After one or two meetings Raj decides to tell Sakina he loves her but before he can Sakina tells Raj that she is already in love with someone else. Sakina says that his name is Imaan (Salman Khan), but he is away. Sakina and Raj start to fall in love when Sakina beilieves that Imaan is not going to come. When Sakina and Raj go for another walk, Sakina spots Imaan standing on the bridge. Sakina says to Raj that she loves Imaan and Raj, knowing how much Sakina loves Imaan, lets her go and she bids him a tearful goodbye. Then as he turns the corner he disappears.

After release of the film, the picture became embroiled in controversy. There were charges that the plot was lifted from a Tamil movie called Iyarkai, without the permission of the film's National Award-winning director S.P.Jananathan.[7] But, the story of Iyarkai itself is loosely based on "White Nights", a Russian short story by Fyodor Dostoevsky, just as Saawariya claims to be.

The soundtrack for the film was released to mixed reviews on September 19, 2007. Indiafm gave the music three out of five stars, stating that "the title song would be remembered for months to come, if not years, the others do not really go that extra distance"[8]

Despite high expectations for the film, Saawariya did not live up to its expectations throughout the Indian audience. On the other hand, Saawariya got mixed reviews in other countries. It maintains a 41% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes[9] and a 53% positive rating ("Mixed or average reviews") on MetaCritic[10]. Newcomers Ranbir and Sonam's performances were praised, and Ranbir Kapoor won Best Male Debut at the Filmfare Awards.
