Divorce, dysfunction, and a Diesel jeans model all add up to another painfully funny stand-up ...Divorce, dysfunction, and a Diesel jeans model all add up to another painfully funny stand-up performance by Christopher Titus. With apologies to Barbra Streisand, not for Titus is love soft as an easy chair. It is, to hear him tell it, a dark, dark abyss that inspires thoughts of suicide and murder. Titus chronicles in excruciating detail the breakup of his 15-year marriage. This is, he admits, his side of the story, but he is as harsh on himself ("I'm just a thin layer of charming with some funny sprinkles wrapped around a huge creamy center of raging, arrogant a-hole," he states) as he is on his ex. His most cutting material concerns his alcoholic father and "Batman villain" of a mother, who were not exactly matrimonial role models. As this piece unfolds, we cringe with the anticipation of some fresh hell visited upon Titus. In one memorable segment, he recalls asking his father to tell him the story of how Titus was conceived. His father ominously responds, "You sure you want to hear this?" Titus employs a much less PC version of Jim Gaffigan's inner voice that he calls his "inner retard," who adds his own commentary on Titus' psyche-scarred life. The world will always welcome lovers, so the old song goes, but Love is Evol, Titus promises, "will either fix your relationship or destroy it." Either way, he adds, "you're welcome." This generous DVD contains an expanded, 85 min. version of the Comedy Central broadcast, with entertaining, anti-romantic extras, including tales of horrific breakups from Titus fans waiting in line, and a two-week countdown to Valentine's Day. What's not to love?
