Although Johnny Depp played an alter ego of Thompson in Fear and Loathing, it seems that he over emphasized his peculiar behaviour. Obviously that seems to be the point, Duke (the main character in F+L) is meant to be a drug crazed over the top counter-culture type character so I suppose it makes sense. Sort of comparing apples and oranges here, but I think Murray seems a bit more natural with the Thompson-esque role.
