What Dante was describing, when he entered the forrest and saw those 3 beasts (depicting 3 wretched natures of men), was actualy his state of mind... that She-Wolf , hungry and yet when she ate she became even more hungry, needs no explanation what was occuring in his mind then. Perfectly written.
The point is that, you must understand that he was on the verge of depression -- the character Beatrice , is actualy the same Beatrice that Dante fell in love during the period he wrote the Inferno.
The first time you read Dante's Inferno, should be taken quite literaly. But when you read it the 2nd time, you should absorb it in an ALLEGORICAL sense.everything he wrode is a fantastic allegory ,describing his state of mind. And ultimately gaining courage and wisdom along the way.
I dunno why i said this ,but ...i thought u would find it interesting.
