Malcolm McDowell plays a World War I air ace, in charge of an elite squadron. Outwardly a bastion of courage, McDowell dies a little every time one of his boys is killed. To steel his nerves, he takes to drink, which has an adverse effect on his abilities. Christopher Plummer staunchly portrays McDowell's commanding officer.

The dogfight scenes are particularly well done and that scene when the lost pilot has to ask an artillery battery for direction to his aerodrome is excellent.
Not only that, there is accuracy in some of the cinematic detail regarding the aeroplanes, but it is not demonstrated that German pilots and German flying tactics were more successful during WW1. Check out 'The Blue Max' for that!
In this sense, the film is rather jingoistic. That doesn't distract me though.
The British planes look like real SE5's and not Kittyhawks or other bi-planes which you usually see in cheapo films about the RFC.
McDowell is excellent and I really enjoyed this film.
Thanks again Texasdude.
