Since Portugal is neutral, the ships cannot be attacked by conventional forces. British intelligence approach a territorial unit of ageing British expatriates to carry out the mission on their behalf.

Trei militari în rezervă aparţinînd Serviciului Secret Britanic, Lewis Pugh (Gregory Peck), Gavin Stewart (Roger Moore) şi Bill Grice (David Niven) sunt trimisi în India în timpul celui de-al doilea război mondial pentru a distruge trei crucisătoare naziste. Cum se află pe teritoriu neutru misiunea trebuie să rămînă strict secretă.


Sub pretextul că se află într-o expediţie de pescuit cei trei bătrîni lupi de mare ajung la destinaţie. Dînd impresia unor mo[negi care au băut peste măsură ei încep acţiunea de sabotaj. Căpitanul Stewart face o diversiune de maestru pe mal în timp ce camarazii săi se pun pe treabă. Filmul se bazează pe un fapt real care a avut loc în 1943 în golful Goa, colonie portugheză situată în India subcontinentală.
