1942年、日本統治下にあるジャワ島レバクセンバタの日本軍俘虜収容所に、朝鮮人軍属カネモト（ジョニー大倉）がオランダの男性兵デ・ヨンを犯す。日本語を解する俘虜、英軍中佐ロレンス（トム・コンティ）は、粗暴ながら奇妙な友情で結ばれていくハラ軍曹（ビートたけし）と処理する。
その一方、ハラの上司で所長の陸軍大尉ヨノイ（坂本龍一）は、歴戦の勇士（空挺コマンド・SASの前身）で俘虜の英国陸軍少佐ジャック・セリアズ（デヴィッド・ボウイ）を預かる事になり、その反抗的な態度に悩まされながら、魅せられてゆく
